Lord Baden Powell founded the World Scout Movement in 1907, and the Sri Lanka Scout Association was established in Sri Lanka in 1912. In 1922, the Maliyadeva College Scout Group was started as the Kurunegala Third Scout Group. Since then, the Maliyadeva Scout Group has produced a large number of scouts and scout leaders, including President’s Scouts.

The Maliyadeva Scout Group produces the largest number of Scouts in the Kurunegala district in various divisions, including Infant Scouts, Cub Scouts, Junior Scouts, Senior Scouts, and Boy Scouts. The group also produces the highest number of President’s Scouts from the Kurunegala district for the country. Scouts from Maliyadeva are qualified to hold positions related to Scout administration, such as members of the Asia Pacific Sub- Committee of the World Scout Association, Headquarters Commissioners, Sri Lanka Scout Association National Training Board Training Leaders, Assistant Training Leaders, District Scout Commissioners, and Assistant District Commissioners.

The Maliyadeva Scouts share their skills and knowledge with the entire Sri Lankan Scouts, and with the participation of nearly a thousand boys and girls, the annual ‘Sampath Ranawaka Memorial Expedition Tournament’ has been organized at the national level for 22 consecutive years. Beyond the national level, the Maliyadeva scouts are also inparticipating internationally in jamborees.
