A new commemorative stamp, FDC, MS and MSFDC were released on 11th February 2025 for ‘Earth summit’ at Dambana, Mahiyanganaya, Sri Lanka, symbolizing the country’s commitment to preserving its rich wildlife and natural resources. The stamp carries a powerful message encapsulated in the theme “Uniting Hearts to Protect Wildlife.” With a rectangular shape measuring 60mm x 30mm, the stamp portrays not just the logo of the Earth Summit but also serves as a vivid reminder of the nation’s unique ecological treasures.

At the heart of the design lies the official logo of the Earth Summit 2025, featuring the theme “Uniting Hearts to Preserve Wildlife”. This is set against a stunning backdrop that celebrates Sri Lanka’s vibrant wildlife and lush greenery, setting the tone for the summit’s focus on environmental preservation. The background beautifully depicts the country’s fascinating landscapes, with delicate greenery and towering trees creating a sense of tranquility and harmony.

The stamp also features a majestic wild elephant, one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic and beloved animals, captured in its natural habitat. This revered symbol of the island’s biodiversity is placed to the right of the Earth Summit logo (from the viewer’s perspective). The wild elephant is a central point, symbolizing the country’s efforts in wildlife conservation and the need to protect such majestic creatures for future generations which has been a topic of concern lately (Elephant-Human conflict).

An artistic and thoughtful inclusion on the stamp is the portrayal of the face of Uruwarige Wannila Aththo, the respected Vedda Chief. Positioned on the left side of the stamp (from the eye’s view), this representation reflects the deep cultural and historical connection between Sri Lanka’s indigenous people and its natural environment. The Vedda community has long been custodians and preservers of Sri Lanka’s forests.

Valued at Rs. 50, this stamp not only represents a call to action for wildlife protection but also serves as a collector’s item, with a limited quantity of just 300,000 stamps. The stamp is produced using four-process color printing, ensuring vividness and durability. A miniature sheet in the shape of an oval has also been released. Additionally, a First Day Cover and MSFDC, priced at Rs. 150, is available. Measuring 190mm x 115mm, the cover encapsulates even more of Sri Lanka’s wildlife.

This stamp and First Day Cover release marks a meaningful step in Sri Lanka’s efforts to protect its biodiversity while engaging the global community in discussions on environmental sustainability and conservation.
