This historic building, one of the first five post offices established in Sri Lanka, holds deep cultural and architectural significance, reflecting the Dutch colonial influence that once shaped the region.
Constructed during the Dutch colonial period, the Galle Fort Post Office is not just a functional space but a persistent testament to the country’s postal history. Recognizing the importance of this historic structure, Sri Lanka’s Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, has initiated a vital project aimed at preserving the Galle Fort Post Office while simultaneously breathing new life into the postal services sector. This project is set to transform the historic building into a center of cultural and postal activity, benefiting both the local community and the growing tourism sector.
The centerpiece of this revival plan is the introduction of a unique horse cart service. The idea is to combine the traditional charm of horse-drawn carts with modern postal services. This initiative will allow the collection and delivery of letters in the Galle Fort area, offering tourists and locals alike a nostalgic and vintage way to experience the city’s rich history. The horse cart service is expected to be a significant attraction and serves as a perfect example of how traditional elements can be in sync with contemporary service requirements.
In addition to the horse cart service, the restoration project also aims to improve the entire postal service infrastructure in the southern province. By enhancing the existing postal services, the government hopes to increase efficiency while generating additional revenue. The plan also includes converting some of the buildings owned by the Sri Lanka Post Department in the southern region into tourist bungalows. This initiative will offer visitors a chance to stay in historic buildings, contributing to both tourism and the revenue stream of the postal department.
