‘Royal Philex 2013’- Sri Lanka’s longest running philatelic exhibition, was held from September 20 to 22 at the Lionel Wendt in Colombo by the students of the Philatelic Club of Royal College, Colombo. There were many rare and valuable stamps on display at the exhibition.
A mini album of stamps issued in connection with special milestones of Royal College and on lives and times of great old Royalists who had rendered an outstanding service to the nation, was launched at the exhibition. The chief guest on the occasion was Nalaka Weeraman, father of well-known entertainer Santhush Weeraman, who himself had been an ardent stamp collector during his schooldays at Royal College.
Speaking on the occasion Mr. Weeraman pointed out that an individual’s general knowledge could be vastly improved by collecting stamps. Principal Mr. Upali Gunasekara said that it was important for students to take part in co-curricular activities such as these, which help to build their character. A distinguished gathering including Deputy Principals, teachers, parents, old boys and officials from the Philatelic Bureau of the Postal Department were present on the occasion.
